Modbus RTU, MQTT, and OPC UA in Telemetry

These protocols are often discussed as if they are direct substitutes. In practice, they usually serve different roles in the stack. The correct decision is less about ideology and more about where data originates, where it is reshaped, and what the upstream platform expects.

  • Modbus RTU often lives close to field devices and legacy equipment
  • MQTT is often useful for telemetry transport and event-oriented movement
  • OPC UA is often useful where richer contextual integration or upstream interoperability matters
